US Representatives Rose and Payne, Jr. Introduce Resolution Recognizing the Importance of Cash

April 28, 2023 Press Release

Washington, DC—Today, Republican U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-06) and Democratic U. S. Representative Donald Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) introduced a House Resolution which expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that maintaining cash is important and a robust and viable payment option. U.S. Representative John Rose released the following statement: “Cash is and always will be king,” Rep. Rose said. “As a growing number of businesses across the country refuse to accept cash, it’s important for Congress to publicly recognize its importance. I am proud to introduce this resolution and hope it can successfully pass the House to send a message to the businesses refusing legal tender.” U.S. Representative Donald Payne, Jr. released the following statement: “Too many stores and businesses in America are trying to reject cash in favor of digital payments,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “But cash is the only option available for millions of Americans to pay for food, housing and other essentials. In addition, there are major security concerns with digital payments that do not occur with cash payments. Companies cannot misuse your data after a cash payment. Besides, there are few things more American than cash. A few years ago, we were fighting over who should be represented on our bills. Now, it seems companies are more than ready to get rid of them entirely.” The resolution states that “a growing number of businesses refuse to accept cash offered in payment by their customers across the United States” despite cash being a “legal tender for all debts, public and private.” Furthermore, it continues by stating that “being able to pay with cash is of particular importance to those consumers who value their privacy and the security of their financial information, and who also prefer to pay with cash because doing so is simple, straightforward, fiscally responsible, and—for those who prefer—completely anonymous.” Read the full resolution here. The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) supports the resolution. Cosponsors of the resolution include Reps. Warren Davidson (R-OH), Henry C. ("Hank") Johnson, Jr. (D-GA), Bill Posey (R-FL), Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY), Alex Mooney (R-WV), Ritchie Torres (D-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Troy A.
